The Lewis family: from Burra to Benacre and Beyond
Presented by Ash Wright
History Month Special Meeting
When James Lewis arrived in the newly formed colony of South Australia on the Rapid in 1838, he could have had little inkling of the family legacy that would be established in the colony and eventually the Commonwealth of Australia. In this address BHS member Ash Wright will look at the Lewis family and its achievements on both the national and international stage.
Ash Wright is a relatively new (and young) member of our Society. He is a serving senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force and is current head of Air Traffic Control at RAAF Base Edinburgh. Ash has a passion for all things history and is actively researching the Lewis family (including the role of Essington Lewis in BHP) and Benacre Estate in Glen Osmond. His research has featured in the December 2018 edition of the Society’s Newsletter where he detailed the origin of a street name (Ashley Avenue) within the former grounds of Benacre.
